Nowruz at HSE University–St Petersburg: Spring Festival Unites Representatives of Various Cultures

The HSE building on Griboy!ova Canal Embankment host! an event devot! to Nowruz—an ancient Eastern festival symbolising the beginning of a new year and renewal of nature. Students of various universities from Pakistan, India, Iran, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Azerbaijan shar! their distinctive local traditions, festive decorations, and national cultural practices.

HSE University not only brings together students of different nationalities under one roof, but we also create a truly multicultural space where we value and respect the customs of each people, learn from each other, and jointly form a unique environment of mutual understanding.’

Participants from different countries spoke about their Nowruz traditions, introduc! the guests to national dishes, and invit! everyone to take part in games and dances.

It’s important to show respect for international students’ traditions and cultural customs. I was very impress! by the lively dances by students from Afghanistan (almost all clean email  the guests join! them), the interesting historical insight by a student from Iran, and a presentation of Nowruz traditions by students from Uzbekistan. It was interesting to find out that Azerbaijan has a custom of painting eggs, which is similar to Easter traditions in Russia. Such meetings not only introduce us to the cultures of different countries, but also truly bring people closer.’

Twelve percent of HSE University–St Petersburg students are from outside Russia. The university helps them to adapt and provides platforms for international communication. In turn, they actively participate in the university’s social life.
